What Other E-hailing Options Besides Grab

The disruption in the Malaysian automotive industry spoilt us with different options in the e-hailing industry. It can be a tedious task to choose the best e-hailing company to hire or to make money with your car, considering that each has its own pros and cons. Today, Grab is currently in the limelight as it takes hold of the largest chunk of e-hailing service in Malaysia after the Uber acquisition in March 2018.

All across the board, there is an air of apprehensiveness about the monopolization of one e-hailing company. As a domino effect, consumers begin to seek alternatives that give better value and service. This state of affairs gives the room for other players making debuts in the Malaysian e-hailing industry. So far, the competition is fierce and each company is ramping up its game to make it big in this market. Let us look some of the new e-hailing options other than Grab that are making waves at the moment.

Mycar fills the market gap and has been hailed as the upcoming main competition for Grab. They become the talk of the town in recent months as its presence is growing all over the country. As a new player, it is not uncommon to have mixed customer reviews with slight inclinations towards the negative side. There are issues need to be addressed ranging from poor app interface to unpleasant driver experience due to one or two bad apples. On the other hand, a large pool of customers also praised Mycar as an alternative for Grab, especially for its pricing competitiveness.

Moving to the north, Mula is a Penang-based e hailing company. At the time of writing, the service is available only in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. So far, the company is getting rave reviews from their customer base for their excellent service. They are currently launching a lot of on-going promotions for an aggressive expansion. The price can be a tad on the higher side and compare to other competitions, as pricing mechanism is based on distance and time riding in the car.

Meanwhile, Quulo claims to have lower fare for passengers but still paying the drivers at a reasonable rate. Instead of taking certain commissions which is the standard practice for most e-hailing company, Quulo’s business model works based on a subscription model. According to their site, a driver pays a subscription fee of RM4.99 per day on the first paying customer and the rest goes into the pocket of drivers without any commission charged. At the time of writing this article, Quulo is in the process of upgrading both their website and application to serve their clients better.

The foreign e-hailing player has arrived at our shores too. Indonesian-based Gabir Holding is a popular e-hailing service which is popular in Jakarta, Medan, and Palembang. It starts gaining attention in Malaysian market especially in Klang Valley. The business model is similar to the others although the client base is smaller than the rest for now. Having Gabir on the street adds up choices for users in the country when hailing a e-hailing service.

Riding Pink is probably one of Malaysia’s most ingenious e-hailing companies. The core business idea of Riding Pink is capturing the e-hailing strictly for women drivers and passengers only. Although we are a fairly safe country, crimes against women passengers happen often. For this very reason, Riding Pink is getting rave reviews from women across the country who do not have to feel insecure taking e-hailing service especially at odd hours of the day. Now, leaving or getting home safely especially for solo woman traveller is safer than before. As women drivers on Riding Pink, they are compensated with great remuneration too.

Another e-hailing company worth mentioning is JomRides which currently operates all over the country. In recent months, they begin to enter into major Malaysian states as part of the expansion plan. The business model is similar to all the above but they have not yet expanded to the scale of Grab or other competitors in this list. For now, JomRides is a small community-based driver but is growing in presence.

When looking into perspective, the growing presence of e hailing companies in Malaysia benefits both drivers and users tremendously. In a short span of months, potential drivers can choose others besides Grab. Perhaps, in the next few months, we will see more entries into the market so that is something to keep an eye on.
